Definition of: OEM
(1) (Original Equipment Manufacturer) An organization that sells products that are made by other companies. The term is confusing because the OEM is really not the manufacturer, but the vendor of the equipment to the end user. However, the OEM is often the designer of the equipment, and “original equipment designer” or “original concept designer” would be more fitting terms.
In most cases, the OEM does not add extra value to the equipment, but merely brands it with its own logo. The OEM’s name is either placed on the devices by the contract manufacturer that makes the equipment or by the OEM itself. In some cases, the OEM does add value. For example, it might purchase a computer from a company and combine it with its own hardware and/or software and sell it as a turnkey system (see VAR).
There are numerous companies that specialize in OEM manufacturing and never sell anything under their own brand (see contract manufacturer). Many companies do both. They manufacture and sell retail, but also have a separate OEM division for goods that are private labeled.
(2) A PC maker. A software company that sells products incorporated into PCs may refer to its customer, the PC hardware vendor, as an OEM. For example, when Microsoft sells its operating systems to PC makers, it refers to them as OEMs.
